Ebay sponge filter
I recently purchased a biological sponge filter off of ebay. I bought it to filter my 10 gallon tank. I read the details and found that it is actually meant to be used as a pre-filter. I thought that since its going into a 10 gallon tank that would be sufficient filtration.

Well first off what's it look like? You need flow through the sponge for it to really filter anything. If you've got water flowing through it then the sponge will act like a filter. Don't worry about what they call it, a porous sponge of the type typically used in an aquarium will work just fine. It has a lot of surface area so it will act like a bio filter (after its been colonized) as well as a mechanical filter. I've got a simple sponge filter on my QT tank and its been running for months with zero ammonia and nitrites.

ok thats good to know I paid about 4 bucks for it new and I'm happy with the product just didn't think it was enough filtration due to the product description.

I'd really like to get a picture or at least description if you can manage it.

I can't manage to get one on here but if you go to ebay and type in aquarium sponge filter. It will pop up sponge filters galore. The one that I have has two sponges that slide over each pickup tubes and travels through the elbows then up a lift tube powered by air. It kinda reminds me of a classic air powered ungergravel filter the only difference is that the filters are above the gravel.

Ok then, yeah. You're good to go. I've got that style myself with only a single sponge.

Thanks for the help. You wouldn't happen to know of any good Fish stores in your area ? I live only 30 minutes from orlando and I'm looking for a creditable LFS.

Wrong side of Orlando. I live in Winter Park so you're at least an hour from the fish stores I know of.
