I am *this* close to throwing in the towel
I am strongly considering cutting my losses and quitting this hobby and putting everything out by the dumpster.
My cory tank has been at .5 ammonia every night, and every night I have done a 20% PWC I have plenty of live plants, I've been using Stability, careful with my feeding, nothing seems to help. It's not so much that I have to test my water every night, and do a PWC every night, it's just that after so much time and hundreds of dollars NOTHING is working.
I got into this thinking that staring at a tank of happy fish would help out with stress, be fun, etc...I must have had my Bad Idea jeans on at the time.
Sorry about the rant guys, you have no idea (or maybe you do) how frustrated I am today.
I will assume without going back through some 95 posts that you are using PRIME for water conditioner and the API freshwater master kit. If so, Put away the test kit and the stability, feed the fish once every other day, perform weekly 20 percent water changes. rinse the filter material only in old aquarium water and only if the water can't flow through it. Don't add anytihng to the water other than dechlorinator.
Considering your ready to call it quits ,what have you to loose other than money already spent?
Yup, 8 drops of Prime for each 2.5g bucket of clean water, I use the API test kit, and I never rinse anything in the tap.
Again, I apologize about the rant :-( I guess I just wasn't expecting it to be this hard.
This may have been covered but did you test your tap water? It's possible you've got ammonia in your tap water. 1077's advice is right on and it's the advice I'd follow. Don't give up! If you follow the advice given it'll all come around, I promise. :-)
Not to insulty your intelligence or anything but after 4 weeks of trying to cycle my 45 gal. with NO fish, my ammonia was 1.0. Couldn't figure out why (neither could my lfs) until my bf admitted to cleaning the tank with window cleaner inside and out before he gave it to me as a gift.
Could it be anything similar?
i agree wqith 1107 stop testing your water and stop doing wc everyday. it is now time for mother nature to do the work. do a 25% once a week and test when you do the wc if the ammonia is still too high o well itll wait till next weeks w/c. Money
Just curious, how long has the yank been running?
You are all right...I have just had a lot going on with me lately that I wont get into here.
I haven't quit...in fact I doubled down :-?
I was at Petco looking for Prime, and they had an Eclipse 12 on sale for $79, and they also had 2 each chain swords and anubias...with my 15% off coupon I walked out with the lot for about $80. I also got the CaribSea peace river substrate, that "instant aquarium stuff". So as advised, I'm gonna let it be until Thurs, at which time I'll feed them, and Friday night I'll do the 2.5g PWC. I'll try not to cheat and test the water.
Just hang in there. Going through the cycle is the hardest part. Sometimes it seems like it takes forever and then suddenly....BOOM....it's cycled. And the great part is, once you have one tank cycled and stable you can cycle other tanks faster by seeding it with media/gravel from the cycled tank.
LOL, no more tanks!
The eclipse 12 is on a sturdy end table next to my bed, my 10g shellie tank is on a $17 target wire shelf in my room, and I have a 5g eclipse that isn't being used. I haven't the room or resources for anything more, at least in the forseeable future. I'm going to wait and see how these two small tanks do before I get any further into this.
