mysterious cichlid fry
I just found some random fry in my 125 gallon cichlid. Its an all male tank with the exception of a female Kenyi and an Orange blotted Mbuna (i can remember what shes called right now). I have about 4, maybe there more hiding in the rock. I am pretty sure it was the Kenyi female, which is really surprising because she has a deformed mouth (it looks as if it was smashed to one side, I couldnt see this when I bought her because she was so small). The fry have kenyi stripes but the metallic shiny blue of a johanni, which I suspect is problably the fathering fish. Is it possible for a kenyi and johanni to shack up?

Okay I finally got some good shots of the fry, I have counted five out now. Attachment 4890Attachment 4891Attachment 4892Attachment 4893

The last two are of the female Kenyi and the Johanni (the suspected parents)
I still don't know how that kenyi held 5 baby fish in that deformed mouth...

wow. It is very easy for them as the fry cant swim thro the little opening. The fry realy look like the Demasoni's cool tho. Look them up on this site.

cool stuff man, its crazy that when you dont try to breed them they do but when you try it can be a pain.

They are going to cause a bunch of trouble when they are bigger, them having the aggression of the johanni and the kenyi.

how are the fry?

The fry are doing very well. There are 5 of them and are growing so fast, and getting a little too bold. There have been many "oh no!" moments because they wander to far from the safety of the rock and let themselves be seen as a possible meal. I think that they think they are bigger than they actually are. All have managed to keep from being lunch though.
Its interesting to observe their mini society. They have their own little pecking order amongst the bigger fish.
