RO/DI filter water question
I just purchased a RO/DI 4 stage water purification system from Buck-Eye. I was wondering if I am supposed to put the DI water in the fish tank or just the RO?? I was told that DI water is known to corrode metal and even copper. Will this water be harmful for the tank inhabitants or is this what it is intended for?

I wish I could help you out on this one. I dont use one of those, I find it easier to buy my water from the store.

DI water is the best. It is more pure then RO. Glad to hear you bought from Buckeye. I always recomend them as their prices cannot be beat. Did you happen to get a TDS meter with it? You want a dual inline unit to keep track of how your filters are doing. Your tap is generally between 200-500TDS, total dissolved solids. Algae food. A good RO will get it around 3 TDS when new and will slowly climb. Your DI resin will take it to 0 TDS and keep it there for several months. So if your RO membrane is putting out 12 TDS your DI will still be 0. When your RO gets to 25 TDS you should plan to change it for a new one as it will exhaust your DI resin faster.

The reason you've heard it will corrode metals faster as it is so pure it must leech minerals from somewhere and create ionic bonds with them to "replicate" natural water conditions. Think of the water as being "positively" charged ions and the materials around it as being "negatively" charged. So like a magnet the positive ions will want to bond with negative ions and become neutral. This process can strip the minerals from pipe to refill the lost minerals. That's why you'll die if your only source of water for drinking is only DI water. Those Aquafinas and Dasani waters are DI. They actually strip minerals from your bone structure. Your body will quickly deplete itself of minerals if DI was your only source. The reawson it is great for tank water, 0 TDS aside, is that it will bond and saturate pollutants in your tank. If you have a skimmer your skimemr will work even better.
