Wet/Dry Filters

If wet/dry filters and any outher type for that matter are a bad thing for the saltwater aquarium. why do manufactures like Aqua Medic continue to design and make such filters

im not exact on this, but there not such bad, my buddy who also had a 125gal saltwater FOWLR, had wet/dry bio-balls and never had a problem? im not sure of his maintence scedule, but sumps and refugiums are the closest thing to the real thing you can get, and you can make one fairly cheap, also wet/dry are pretty good on freshwater too, maybe someone else has a more educated answer then me though.

The answer is sales and profit. These units have a use in certain applications, such as very large fish load marine predator systems, or freshwater setups.

Fortunately, most manufacturers have changed their sump designs to include a protein skimmer and refugium, rather than bioballs, because the public has become much more knowledgeable. Unfortunately, a certain percentage of people do not take the time to research for themselves.

It will take the LFS owner refusing to carry product which is not beneficial for their livestock for these units to no longer be offered. Unfortunately information travels VERY slow in this hobby. Berlin style systems utilizing a protein skimmer, live rock, and live sand have been uses successfully since the mid 1990's. Here we are, some 15 years later, and people still are setting up marine systems without the use of a protein skimmer, which is akin to driving a car in the dark and sticking a flashlight out the window.
