Tank too big for tetras?????
Just got back from a trip to the venerable and experience older woman who has a large LFS in her basement. She has been in the hobby since the 60s.
I have purchased most of my livestock from her. She is very into the hobby and cares greatly about the care of her fish.
I am perplexed by what she just told me. I have always wanted to put a nice big school of cardinals or neons in my 75 and still trying to decide what tankmates to put in with them.
"your tank is too big for tetras like neons and cardinals. there is too much pressure from such a tall tank, they get tired from having to swim all the time. they do much better in a smaller tank"
Really? Are these fish not from the AMAZON FREAKIN RIVER????
I really want to give her the bussiness, but I don't think I am being unreasonable wanting to put tetras in a 75 gallon tank.
I have 30 neons and 6 cardinals in an 80 gallon tank and they've been doing great. This "high pressure" stuff sounds like complete nonsense to me. Even if they were that sensitive to pressure, they could just stay near the surface.
I have researched the habitats of these fish, in detail, and it is not the pressure of the large tank that is of concern but the filtration. These fish occur in slow streams with very dim light. Currents from over-filtration is a concern (as with all such fish, SA or SE Asian, that occur in such waters). And of course water parameters are critical. It may be that she was thinking along the lines of filters in larger tanks, and didn't express it very well. The size of the water volume is not an issue; the vast expanse of the Rio Negro, within the world's ten largest rivers, does not support such thinking.
She is an elderly woman, I think she just didn't explain herself well.
I just wanted to cup my hands over my ears and yell "they are fish, no tank is too big!!!"
Or...maybe it's more proof that time doesn't equal experience ;-)
no tank is to big... like that guy with a 50,000 gallon tank
I think she has her system that works and she is not open for new ideas.
But you can't argue with her results. Beautiful fish.
Just not my style of customer service.
Bring on the 50,000 gallon tank filled with cardinals!
