Question about Nitrates
I have a 5 gallon tank that is planted (green wendtii crypt, amazon sword, and Brazilian pennyhort). Over the past two weeks, my water parameters have changed some. I have been having my nitrate levels change. My Nitrites are still staying at 0, my Ammonia is still at 0, and my pH is still at 7.4-7.6 (a little high I know). But my nitrates usually stay at 5 ppm, but within the past 2 weeks they moved to 10 ppm (and have stayed there). I have my betta and 3 otos in the tank. I don't overfeed, my fish will eat right away, so there is never any extra food in the bottom.
I was wondering why my nitrates increased out of no where. I know if they are below 25 ppm they are fine...but is there a way to make them decrease? I've tried water changes and it doesn't change it. Could it be my tap water parameters changing?
Do test your tap water, I have nitrates in my tap water and the amount does fluctuate.
Nitrates rising between water changes is normal, but should lower with a water change. All the fish waste is converted to nitrates.
I actually just thought about the tap water. I am going to test it here after while. I know these otos poop a lot, so maybe that is causing it?
I would doubt that it would be due to the otos. I keep a nearly identical tank as yours, planted 6gl w/ betta & otos and have never had a nitrate problem. What were your tap results??
very possible that it is your tap. citys do add chems to their water from time to time to keep the water drinkable and clean. there could also be various things that the water picks up on the way from the plant to your house.
