Stocking 20G High Aquarium

I am getting a 20 gallon tank tomorrow. I am planning on the fish I would stock it with and how I would cycle it?

My current plan for fish is:
2 Dwarf Gourami's
3 Guppies
4 Albino Cory Catfish
5 Silver Hatchet fish
I ran this through aqadvisor.com and it sad 99% stocking capacity.

I was wondering your opinion on this tank? the capacity? or any concerns?
Also could I cycle the tank with any of the above listed fish?

-Thanks

Hi wbentley and welcome to the forum.

What type of filter do you plan on using and will you have live plants? That makes a big difference in stocking. In my personal opinion, aqadvisor tends to err on the side of caution so I would actually suggest adding at least one more guppy as they do better in larger groups. If you get a mixed group, get one male and three females.

For cycling . . . is this going to be your first tank or do you have another tank set up? If you have other tanks, you can use filter media from that to start your cycle. Otherwise, I'd suggest doing a fishless cycle, as none of those fish are hardy enough to withstand cycling. You can find information on cycling here:

Adding a very good biological bacteria supplement will also help. I recommend Microbe Lift products or Seachem Stability. Don't get any Tetra products, as I've read that they don't even use the right kind of bacteria.

Welcome to the forum

If you want to keep 2 gouramis, then go with 2 honey gouramis instead of the dwarf gouramis. Multiple DGs in a tank that small is just asking for trouble. I agree that aqadvisor is very conservative. 100% is most definitely not the limit of your tank size.

You may want to go with pigmy gouramis. All very attractive. I'd be a little concerned about gouramis and hachet fish. The gouramis could tear their fins being territorial.

No fish in the cycle. You might try a snail after 2 weeks.
