Kribs in a twenty gallon tank?
I would like to breed kribs and was wondering does only the female have a red spot on her chest? What could i keep with the kribs?

A 20g will work just fine. Kribs are sexually dimorphic most of the time. Females often have more vivid colors although the fins are shorter and they are noticeably smaller in size. I have yet to see males sporting bright red patches on their bellies. Usually the males I find have purple patch but it would depend as there are various species of kribs available in the trade.

Considering kribs tend to become extremely territorial as they spawn, your best bet is focus on top dwelling tankmates particularly danios. Danios are very feisty fish and with floating plants added, they tend to avoid the aggression of kribs much more effectively than anything else. If you intend to breed kribs, I would not advise adding any more tankmates. Keep the tank simple.

I wouldn't advise ANY tank mates with a pair of breeding cichlids..

I'm with Lupin on this. Danios are fast and zippy, staying at the top strata of the water column, while the kribs will be in the bottom third. I don't see a problem for the kribs or the danios.

Would cory cats get in trouble?

aunt kymmie 09-02-2009 04:15 PM

Yes, they would. Cories are strictly peaceful bottom dwellers and breeding kribs would kill them. The only thing I'd put in a tank with breeding kribs would be fish that prefer and stay in the upper strata of the water column. Anything else will get harrassed to death.

ok, what do i feed the young kribs

What I've read states powdered flake food, cyclopese and baby brine shrimp make good first foods.
