Any recomendations for a 1 gal refugium?

I had a skilter as my skimmer for my 30 gallon tank, and have ordered the coral life skimmer to replace it with. I figure this gallon tank w/ small powerhead will make a decent fuge. Any recomendations? I will have a small bag of activated carbon near the powerhead, and on the lower area will fill with sand to about the same level (2-3") Any recomendations on what else should go in there?
