substrate?

i keep seeing this word thrown around alot...is it in reference to whatever you have on the bottom on your tank? ie sand, gravel, rocks, etc? or it your decorations? im confused, please help!

also, with a basic 10 gallon tank, is just my regular filter that came with my tank kit adequate? b.c ive seen where some people have talked about some kind of bio filter underneath the gravel or soemthing....just wondering. thanks for being patient and putting up with my newbie-ness! i just want to make sure that i am doing this right! dont want any dead fish!!!

Girl,
Subtrate is meaning gravel , sand etc... I bought a 10 gallon kit also and it came with a filter too, I've been using the filter that came with the tank for 5 months now, its been a good ole' filter! So I would say it is an adequate filter.

If you lose fish dont feel like a horrible fish owner either! And sometimes its not because of lack of experience either. I sometimes lose fish still and I think im doing everything right. It's all apart of learning the hobby!
