Guppies staying at top of aquarium
Hi all, I'm a bit concerned about my new guppies (new tank too), they never go down to the bottom of the tank and seem to just stay swimming around with their noses just breaking the water surface at the top of the tank, i've seen other guppies that don't do this, I was just wondering what might be causing it... I have a hunch that its down to lack of oxygen, and will be purchasing an air pump in the very near future.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Thats normal behaviour for guppies, hanging at the top of the water.........Their main food in the wild is mosquitoes......A few things to check is your water temp......Try to keep it aroung 78 degrees...........Its possible your tank is too warm and warm water does not carry as much oxygen as cooler water does..........If this is the case, an air pump is a good idea and you could also float frozen water bottles in your tank to drop the temp a little.......
depending on where you live and the temp inside the house, you could also pull the heater out of the tank. Guppies can tolerate temps as low as 70. During the summer, our tank is still at 74 without the heater. Also, are there plants or anything in the bottom of the tank for them to hide and play in? If thre are, eventually, they will get curious and venture down.
