Shale or no Shale

I gathered some shale from the canyon today and was planning on putting it in my new tank. I keep finding conflicting info on whether or not I am safe to use it. Some of it has what looks to be foliated streaks of marble while some pieces do not. It also fizzes when placed in muriatic acid.

Anyone have some guidance?

I think shale and marble are safe. Test it with vinegar, if it fizzes don't use it.

you can put anything in ur tank as long as vinegar doent fizz when you put it in or it will effect ur ph and through ur tank off balance.

to answer your question: No.

Just about anything fizzes in hydrochloric (muriatic) acid. You need to use vinegar, aka acetic acid.

The fizzing with vinegar is very light and almost unnoticeable unless you look close and hold it to your ear. But it is there.

then the answer is simple: dont use it.
