How to sex a fish?
I have 4 cichlids and i think one is a boy and three are girls, however WHO KNOWS lol. Does anyone know how i can even begin to tell. I know i could probably research, but i love others stories of experience. :-?
What type of cichlids are we talking about?
I have two cobalts and two rusty cichlids...........They are pretty, i have a couple pics on my album if you would like to check them out. ;) Just thought it might be neat if they are comfortable enough to breed.
Nice looking fish! From the little I've read the male cobalt has a more vibrant color than the female. On the rusty they say the color is identical only the male has clear egg spots and a longer anal fin.
You can examine their vent region for the genital papilla between the anus and anal fin. To do this you will have to remove the fish from the water. The genital papilla is larger on the female as you can see in the pics (middle arrow). The top arrow is the anal pore, the bottom arrow is the anal fin.
That's the problem with venting...you have to remove the fish from the water!
LOL ya, thats the scary part some people dont want to do but prolly the best way to be sure on the sex of the fish. Ive done it once and never again, I really hate taking them out of the water. Seems cruel to me, I freak out when they take their sweet a$$ time at the pet store to put the fish in the bags.
For me it would entail breaking down my entire tank down just to catch them. I'll probably never know the sex of my rams but I'm okay with that. ;-)
I agree with you on the bagging skills of some of the fish store employees. My yoyos had a very rough go of it by the inept employee that was trying to net them until I intervened. I'm sure that guy never wants to see me walk through their doors again!
Well thank you very much......thats wonderful......Im not against taking them out, but it would probably stress them out......and the little buggers would probably flop out of my hands.
I live in calgary and we have a wonderful store called pisces pets and they specialize in aquariums. They have been wonderful to me and their help and attentiveness to the fish is unsurpassed. I must say im am blessed in that department. Quite an experience. Kind of like going to the fish zoo for my son. lol.
If i ever do find out....i guess i may just have babies one day if they dont eat them.
