Black dots on my gourami's cheeks

Some black dots have appeared on the cheeks of my dwarf golden gourami. He seems to eat less and has a habit of hiding in the plants or moving up and down the tank walls to the water surface or staying motionless at an angle. He looks like he wants to climb vertically up the tank wall. Its a bit creepy to watch him.
Any ideas what the black dots could be? They seem to gradually get darker and more obvious when the light is switched on.None of the neons or the other gourami are showing any signs of the dots yet.Is it rust? or freckles?

mating

Hi,

Actually my set up is really basic, none of that Ph test etc, just a filter and air stone.

It was very hard to take close photos cause he kept darting around.

And it seems like they were mating! The guy charged at the female then they curled around each other and sank slowly to the floor, it was a bit freaky! They did it twice then now the female is being mean to the male and avoiding him, the poor male looks really sad hiding in the plants.

Wonder if the pigmentation on his cheeks are caused by breeding time? his fins are alot redder than the female too( think thats a sign?)And the female is looking rounder than the male.
