Could these be eggs?
I only come on here when I have a problem or concern about my tank bc you guys rock!
I have a 55 gallon set up. I have had 8 African Cichlids for 3 years now and one pleco. The same fish...the whole time. They are about 5-6 inches each. I don't have any livee plants or anything, just regular rock. I couldn't tell ya the ph or anything bc I havent had a water test in a while since I have had the same set up and do regular water changes....my fish are pretty healthy.
Anyway, about 3 days ago I noticed little white dots everywhere...its not algae, and Im not sure what to think about it. If you look at a rock, its like a tiny white hair then the little pinhead white thing attached to it. There's probably a few thousand in the tank. They are on the walls, the plants, the rocks...everything. I have never had babies in the tank, and never seen any eggs, and from what I've read online, Cichlids are mouth breeders...so Im not sure what this is...but if anyone could give me some advice I'd really appreciate it.
I am far from an African cichlid expert but I am certain that not all Africans are mouth brooders. Among them are egg scatterers, like you seem to have, and fish that act like doting parents after laying their eggs all in one place. Do you know which species of Africans you have so that those who do know them can help identify the likely parents?
I have 2 Venustus, a Maingano, 3 electric yellow ones (which are almost all black now) an orange one, and a big one that I cant identify because it looks nothing like what it did when it was a baby. I know this isnt much help.;..
the electric yellow ones, are their faces black ?
could be yellow labs, males, and they're mouth brooders.
but i'm probably wrong.
have you looked up planria ? perhaps that's what it is.
hopefully someone can help.
I'm pretty sure it's planaria :(
Everything I've read says that planaria are not harmful to your fish and to get rid of them you should stop feeding your tank for a few days. Your fish will be fine going without food for a few days and you'll be starving the worms, thereby hastening their demise. HTH
yeah i'm with kymmie.
and i've had them before too.
