New tank(filter and stocking questions)

Hello everyone,

I like this forum, seems likes it been around awhile and I like the answers the big posting people tend to give. So I figured I would make this my new hobby and join the club :)

Ok, so that being said I have a questions for the forum.

I have a 30g tank with a Fluval 206 External Filter. I did a fish less cycle and made sure my water was good before adding any fish. My first question is, how often do I have to change the material in the filter? Since it is layers do you only change a bit at a time? also I only have what came with the filter, is there anything else someone can recommend putting in?

The other major question I have which seems to be very common but no solid answers I can find.
How many fish can a 30g tank hold. I currently have:

2 Celebes Rainbow
4 blood fin tetras
2 cherry barbs
I would like to add a catfish(I have sand substrate) and the family wanted to add a few more other randoms. If I have an excuse to get another tank :) all the better, but really is what I have enough?

Thanks!!8-)

I have a 29G tank with a 206 filter. I removed the carbon pack from the filter. Added some generic floss with the black foam, added another Bio Max package to the second basket and added some fine felt pads in the top basket.

So far I've changed the media (felt & floss) after a months run. I'm going to let it run for two months before
opening it and rinsing all the media and see what happens. My tank is fairly heavily planted, I suspect that helps.

As for the stocking question I suggest AqAdvisor. You can play with different set ups to get a better idea of the results of various set ups. Just google AqAdvisor.

Hope it helps.

I change the media basically when it is falling apart. In my canister filter I still haven't changed the pads after two years, and that is an unplanted tank. Removing a bunch of the media each month to replace it, just means a loss of some of your bacteria and money. Much better to just clean them when it's needed.

Not really with the fish mentioned, but I do know they are all shoaling species and should be in bigger groups than that.

yeah I JUST found aqadvisor and I'm starting to see I'm kind of light lol I think for now I'll add a few of each to get 5 cherry barbs
5 bloodfins
5 rainbows.
Then hold out there and see how it goes.

Thanks for the advice on the filter. I have not even opened it since the tank fully cycled. I was just not sure if there was some after market media that would be better than what comes with it.

Thanks again so far :)

This is a 30 breeder? 12 inches high? If that's right I might do one, maybe two shoals plus bottom feeders. I'm a fan of larger groups and fewer species though since it just looks better to me. Even if you don't go that route I'd still up things even further so you're in the 6-8 range at least.

So I went and measured it to be sure and it is according to aqadviosr a 28g bowfront.
