I have a red platy that I got around the start of July. We are pretty sure that it is a female but not 100% sure. She has been growing in size ever since we got her. She has been starting to act a little unusual by hiding a lot and floating around the bottom. We have read up on the pregnancy of Platy's and it seems she has been this way longer than usual. She has a couple of small black spots on the side of her stomach and I'm not sure if it's her coloring or fry. I did not notice them though until today. She seems to be very healthy though. She is in a large tank with a dalmatian Mollie and two guppy's.
Could anyone tell me if she could possibly be pregnant?
or if anything else could be wrong?
It is always helpful to post a photograph if you can, as it makes answering a whole lot easier. If you cant post a photograph, lets start by sexing the fish...what do the fins around the anal opening look like. Are there 3 fins that look roughly the same in size like the picture below (Female)
Or does the third fins at the anal opening look long and thin like the picture below (Male)
I hope that helps for starters:-D
I was able to take some decent pictures! Please tell me what you think?
Definatley female and very possibly pregnant. Do you see the larger fin at the anal vent? If it was a male it would be long and thin. Maybe someone else has a better way to explain it.
The fin where the fish eliminate their wastes is called an anal fin. The anal fin in a female like yours is more or less a fan shape or maybe you can think of it as a triangle shape. That same fin in a male is modified into what is called a gonopodium which is long and thin and used to impregnate the female. SubAtomicScope's second picture, the male, shows the gonopodium very clearly. Sub's pictures are so clear, I don't think you can get a better shot without removing the fish from water and holding everything in place for easier examination. Even then I don't think it would be much clearer.
