Falling for guppies (my story)
Sooo I have been keeping an aquatic turtle for about 2 months now. It is a good sized one and was rescued from what would have been being squished by a train. It seems to really enjoy eating live fish. I got tired of running to the store so I set up a 10 gallon tank (incorrectly I might add) I would just throw whatever feeders I got into the 10 gallon (feeder guppies/ rosey minnows/ghost shrimp) and feed the turtle the live food when ever.
But then I started keeping the feeder guppies and ghosts and only feeding the minnows. I started falling for the guppies and not wanting to feed them to the turtle. I started getting excited over the pregnant ones (tried to only feed the boys to the turtle) and kept waiting for babies. LOL I stopped vacuuming the tank because I was sucking up itty bitty ghost shrimp. Was hoping they would mature and then I would have little food farm. Haha
Last week I found two baby guppies in the tank. That got me super excited so I decided I should properly take care of my tank if I wanted them to live. I took a water sample in and was shocked to find out my water was in good condition. I fully expected it to suck! While I was buying more feeders I glanced in the fancy tank and saw a huge square female. She was swimming up and down the tank. I asked the clerk how hard it would be to get the fatty and she said easy. I took fatty home (her name now) and set her up and she swam around. I could almost see the eyes of the babies so I was excited. I also feared she might die so I waited. Got up in the middle of the night that night! and happened to see more babies. I popped her in a nursery tank and netted the babies and went back to bed. Looked in the morning and I have about 30 plus little guys.
Mommy is a pale orange with a darker tail. I am stupid excited (as you can tell) by my babies. Today is day 4 and they are still going strong and I haven't lost one yet (as far as in the nursery- don't know for sure if mommy ate any) I cannot wait till they get older so I can see what colors they will be.
No one else in my life understands my interest in these little goobers. I was hoping you all would. :)
Ohhh, pics please :-)
That's exactly what makes this such a fantastic hobby. It's been keeping me excited for over 40 years and two of my children have caught the bug too:-P
Enjoy them, there's nothing like growing babies on to adulthood and seeing what colors and patterns appear.
omg im going to breed guppies in a 20 gallon any tips
