are there different kinds of algae

I have this dark goldish stuff starting to appear in my tank, it is only in the middle. It looks like dark golden and it is on the tops of the pagodas and right in the middle on top of the gravel. I am just wondering what it is since it is not anywhere else in the tank. I am working on getting a pic and will post as soon as I get it.

I just got back from vacation and suspect my friend overfed a little. I am getting ready to do a water test. Any idea what is going on?

In my reading I realize it is the brown algae and maybe from a bit of overfeeding and no lights on except for maybe 30 minutes during feeding for the whole week. My ammonia is 0, nitrite 0 and nitrate is 20. I will do a partial water change tonight which is on schedule. How do I get rid of it?

There are many, many different kinds of algae.

Algae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As far as brown algae, it appears at the beginning of of a tank's cycle and will be gradually replaced by green algae as time progresses.
