Yellow Buenos Aires Tetra
I have a small school of Buenos Aires Tetras in my aquarium, and one of them has all lemon yellow fins... Am I correct in assuming this is a male? This was the first yellow Buenos Aires I'd ever seen, as all the others I've seen seem to have red or only partial yellow fins. Is this common for males? I'd love to get more like him, but I just can't seem to find any others!
I am not aware of sexual dimorphism in the Buenos Aires Tetra [Hyphessobrycon anisitsi]; as with many of the characins, males are noticeably slimmer than females, and a bit more colourful, but both sexes share the same basic colouration. I understand that there is a variant that has a lemon-yellow caudal fin (tail fin); perhaps one of these is mixed in with your group.
Hmm, well all his fins are yellow, not just his caudal fin. And he doesn't have a speck of red anywhere on him... Here's a couple of (very poor quality) pictures of him. I guess my next question would be has anyone else seen a Buenos Aires like this one? What's the deal with them?
I did a check in Baensch/Riehl and they report that the fins of the male are brighter red or tending towards yellow. My oversight. Just to be certain, I searched a few other references, and all that I checked mention brighter red fins for males, lighter red/pinkish for females, so to answer your initial question the yellow is not solely indicative of a male.
They must be doing some selective breeding on these fish....I was in my local fish store last week and they had a tank full of the Yellow Finned Buenos Aries Tetra.........Never seen them before, but i remembered this post and thought i would share...........You probably got a single species that got mixed up.......
