Sad Fish
My oscar is sad - he swims oddly and he seems to be having trouble making his mouth work. it just hangs open all the time. He is unable to eat because his lips don't work. right before this happened the filter died, on the tank, and overnight he only had an air stone running. Any ideas what this could be or how I can feed him?

try a new diet, how big is his tank?

peanutweasel 01-22-2007 06:12 PM

He looks regular - except not moving his mouth and swimming funny.

musho3210 01-22-2007 06:13 PM

yeah he doesnt look so good. How big is the tank and what are the water params

20 gallons - my husband takes care of all the technical stuff - he's more content to just let him die, but i've had this fish since he was little and would like to help him. is it true they can't feel pain? I know he's not eating and i hate to think he'll starve to death.

yes they feel pain, and hes feeling it right now. A 20 gallon tank is WAY to small for him. He would need at least 55 gallons, a 75 would be much better though. Im sure you can upgrade the tank, and if you have a 75 gallon you could fit in another oscar to keep this one company. FOr now do a 25% water change DAILY and try to keep him alive as you set up the new tank

I agree with Mush... he needs a much larger tank. You said you've had him since he was small... how long have you had him? How big is he now?
Without water params to help, there's not much anyone is going to be able to tell you other than to get this fish into at least 55 - 75 gallons. Keep in mind that if you go 55, eventually you'll still need 75 gallons, as a 55 is too narrow to allow a full grown oscar to turn around properly.
What kind of foods are you feeding him? How often? How long has he been like this? The locked jaw could be caused from a few different things, illness or injury. I will look into any possible help you could give him, but IF there is something that can be done, I know its not easy. How long has it been since the fish ate something?
