Rummy nose tetras
Hi! I've been planning for a 15g planted tank with corydoras. (most probably the more common species like paleatus or aeneus.)

I've been entertaining different ideas on mid-water tankmates. Initially I announced that I wasn't interested in any characins. However, I saw a tank of rummy nose tetras at a petshop and I was attracted to them.

Do you think these are compatible with corydoras? I see conflicting info on the web. Also, will 7 rummy nose tetras and 7 corydoras be overstocking?

Rummies are one of my favorite tetras and they're great schoolers as well. They should be fine with corys. I think 7 of each is pushing it a little in a 15 gallon but if you stay on top of your water changes you may be ok.

Rummynose's are a great little fish and you wont find a tetra that will shoal as tight as a group of rummynoses.......Its awesome seeing my group of 10 going from one side to the other side of my one 55 i have...........Rummys and cories will do fine together in your 15 gallon, but i would personally cut the numbers on the cories back to 5 and increase the numbers of rummys to 10.......A few things about rummys, they are very intolarable of deteriorating water conditions and will not last long if you ignore your tank maintainance............They dont handle water that is not stable

One other thing, there are more than one fish that is reconized as a rummynose tetra.........3 different species are all sold as rummynoses and all have a similar look..........Some other members (Byron, more than likely)can chime in with the latin names if you would like to know them.........Good Luck with your tank!

'Twas the good ol' days when several members love to discuss rummies. I kept dozens of tetras before. I missed them.

I've read about the 3 species of rummynose already. I didn't ask the petshop what scientific name they had but I'm sure they know since it's one of the upper-scale ones and the owner is quite knowledgeable. I'll do so when I return.

OK, will follow fishin pole's advice of 10 rummys and 5 cories. What schedule of tank maintenance would you recommend? 20-30% WC every week? every 3 days?

With that kind of stocking, weekly will work just fine. Feed them small meals 2-3 times a day only and fast them one day per week (every Sunday is preferable).

Observing the Sabbath, eh? lol

Ordinary flake food will work for the tetras, right? While sinking pellets alternating with algae tabs for the cories.

Now if I can just save up enough money... food is so expensive nowadays!

Flakes will work just fine but they offer little nutrition as the vitamins are soluble and degrade easily with flakes. Use small pellets or shrimp pellets rather.

I see, thanks.

Will the common pellet size (the size of the common red and green ones) be small enough?

They'll never eat that stuff. None of my fish ever relished it. It's rubbish.
