Mystery Red Stuff
I asked this question last year and got some good suggestions but at that time I did not have good pictures to present. This red stuff is taking over my tank and it is a constant battle to keep it off of everything. It is squishy like a sponge and grows to about ½” thick on everything. It is easily scraped or nudged off in chunks as you can see and one of the photos has a quarter as a reference of size. The quarter did not turn out but you get the idea. I have not found anything yet that will eat it, but my tank is healthy with corals propagating nicely. Please help if you know what it is, and better yet how to get rid of it.

I would have thought that with the better pictures that someone would have responded with some ideas as to what this is. The stuff is pretty, but I really do not want it in my tank. It would not be bad if it stayed in one spot, but it is growing everywhere like a weed. Surely someone must recognize this stuff as I cannot be the only one with it.

I believe I came across some info on this a few months ago when I researched cyanobacteria. I think it's red bubble algae (Red Valonia is the actual name of the stuff). If you break it up it spreads spores all over the tank and starts all over again. Do a Google graphic search for some images. I think it's what you have.
Also do a Google search for some ways to remove it without spreading it. I think it comes from too much phosphates and too much iron. You can find a bunch of info on the stuff through some Google searches - so you're not the only one who has it.

Thanks gus1911. I think that you have put me on the right track.
