brown algae type growth

ouch, bad news, i got a large algae type growth, it is brown, thats all i can say, it is growing on my ornaments, my wall, and my fake plants, i got a large growth near the side of the wall, i'll take a picture of it once i get a camera. It is brown (the color of poop) and it grows in spots, any help?

Brown algae is diatoms. They will go away on their own in a few days to a few weeks. Or the other option, Otos. They love the stuff.

musho3210 01-17-2007 09:03 PM

do they pose any threat, or are they just ugly cause they look like poop

Lonewolfblue 01-17-2007 09:11 PM

Nope, diatoms don't pose any threat, just look bad sometimes. And Otos are really cute little guys, and stay very small. ;)

i see where your going, wouldnt my tank be a bit over crowded? 7 zebra danios, and i plan on getting 2 bolivian rams, and now maybe i should get like 2 otos? Is this over stocked? I have a 20 gallon high tank with two 20 gallon power filters (adds up to 40 gallons). If i need to i could get more stuff, i got 100 dollars as birthday money so i might get a power head for extra oxygen. But im still worried about over crowding...

Of course not.:) Put the fish's habitual use of different levels into consideration. Bolivians stay mostly on the bottom or mid level and with two small otos, it's not overstocked.

ok good. What size do ottos get and do they need driftwood?

Lonewolfblue 01-17-2007 09:54 PM

Nope, don't need driftwood. They get to maybe 1.5-2"

musho3210 01-17-2007 09:56 PM

ok so danios are around the same size as ottos. Lets look at it at a worse case scenario, all my fish turn out to be big for there size. That would mean 9 2 inch fish, making 18 inches of fish, plus 2 3 inch fish making my tank 24 inches of fish.... Hmm i need to do more water changes, im just lucky i got double filtration
