What kind of tank are you planning on doing?

The three most common categories for sw are: Fish Only (FO), Fish Only With Live Rock (FOWLR), or Reef Tank.

Different types of tanks have different lighting requirements. Do you plan on doing coral?

Yeah, we call this a reef tank. It's made to emulate the coral reefs, with a few fish, some corals (whether they be hard or soft corals) and invertebrates.

Decide now what kind of tank you will be doing over the long run. You don't have to (and probably shouldn't) add everything at once. If you decide to start with a few easy to keep fish (clowns, gobies, etc.) and down the road a year or two, decide to add coral, at least you are set up.

With that being said, research these types of lighting: Metal Halide, Power Compact Flourescent, T5HO Flourescent, and LED lighting. Everybody has an opinion as to what the best lighting is for the situation; I personally use T5's on my 150 gallon reef tank. There are a lot of factors to consider when choosing lights, and the more you research, the better.

x1 on the T-5s. Less chance of needing a chiller and still great lighting for the corals and that crocea clam that you will want to get, once you see a nice one LOL
