Emerlad Corydora Ill, looking for help
One of my 9 emerald corydoras is behaving strangely. It is kept in a cycled 20 gallon heavily planted tank that is maintained at 80 degrees.
I have a cory that lays in one place for long periods, even staying still when other corys approach or nudge it. However, when it does begin swimming it usually is erratically. It does flips and brushes its body against different objects.
I am thinking some kind of parasite, but I wanted to make sure. Also, what are my different options of medications that will not harm bettas, plants, or inverts?
Fish rubbing on objects (flashing) is a symptom of many issues. I would not raise the temp unless you have diagnosed the problem as ICH. Raising the temperature could cause some issues to become worse like columnaris.
IMO your temperature is on the high end for Corys and I would suggest lowering it around 76 if possible. This may or may not help your issues as I am not sure what it is. I would suggest a long observation with the room lights off and the tank lights on; This way they cant see you and are less likely to be spooked. Look for anything that doesn't look correct.
Coppersafe/Maracyn is good broad spectrum combo that treats some of the most common issues. ICH, Columnaris, Flukes, Velvet, Fin rot, Tail rot, Parasites and Popeye to name a few but the coppersafe is harmful to inverts and likely some plants. I have used these with Anubis, java fern and Cryptocoryne without negative effect. Is it possible to move the inverts to another tank? Also. make sure that you sanitize everything (nets, buckets, siphons...) to prevent reintroducing the issue to your newly treated tank.
I can not lower the temperature as I prefer to keep it at that for the 10 betta girls, which prefer 78-80 degrees. The problem has seemed to correct itself, at least for now. I will continue observing and consider further treatment if anything changes.
