Nitrates Before Ammonia
Hey everyone, so my 90g reef has been set up for about a week now and I've been testing the water every other day. Today, I tested Ammonia, then Nitrites, then Nitrates... I have yet to see any ammonia or nitrite reading, but my Nitrates read about 25-30 ppm...
Since this tank is new, I am curing the LR in the tank. Is this whats causing the Nitrates to appear first? I assume it should cause ammonia, as its what I have read.. should I be worried about the nitrates being there first?
How many lbs of LR did you put into the tank. You shouldn't use too much uncured LR because it will craete this horrible smell and then you'll have issues of getting rid of the smell. there is a chance that the LR you did get is cured already and won't have to go through a normally high ammonia spike, but rather a small and un-noticeable spike.
We currently have 89 or 90 lbs of LR in the tank atm. Probably getting a little more on thursday, needs a little more to look complete.
Maybe it is cured already, I asked the guy at the LFS we bought it from, and he said it hasn't been, but maybe he didnt understand me as it was kinda noisy. And yeah, I haven't gotten any smell out of it. Tank smells fine. Perhaps thats what it is, thanks Kellsindell,
so should I leave the nitrates in? Or do a water change to bring them down?
