Plecos. Not sure where to post this. But is it normal for Plecos to just hang in the water. I have a 20 gallon tank. Our pleco usually is suctioned to the sides of the tank, but for some reason the last few days, he is simply hanging in the water. Is this normal behavior? Thanks. |
That is highly unusual for a pleco. What are your water parameters? Something could be wrong with it causing the plec to hang on the surface. I moved your thread by the way to Catfish section.:) |
Not sure. Unfortunately all the supplies I had, got used up. Have to get more with the next paycheck. I do know, that my grand daughters were here the other day ages 4 and 3 and they were pounding on the tank. Could that have scared him? |

Right now he is suctioned to the front of the tank. He is 7 inches long. And I do have a heater. It keeps the water in the green range on the thermometer. I did notice that when he was smaller, he used to hide under the castle I have. He is to big for that now. And it is mostly from say about 5 on that he goes up to the surface. His head is up at the top of the water, almost like his mouth is sticking out of the water, and his tail is at the bottom. |
If he is eating well, I guess there is nothing wrong with him. The way fish eats also helps you determine their health condition.:) Just make sure you are familiar with how they behave. Nocturnal fish, for example, tend to eat at night but if you don't see the fish eating even at night for several nights, then something could be wrong.:) |
Thanks for all the help. He died. We came out yesterday morning and found him dead. All the other fish in the tank are doing fine. |
