Increasing sand bed depth?
 

I have a 14 gallon biocube with a shallow sand bed, i'd really like to increase it but didn't from the start due to the lower filter intake on it. Well I'm going to cover that up (for other purposes, not just the sand bed) so it's no longer a problem. What is the safest way to increase the depth of my sand bed?

Someone on here reccomended that I just take the bag and place it as close to the bottom as possible; then make a cut and start to let the sand out (this will minimize any type of sand storm effect as much as possible) obviously turn off any filtrtion or powerhead while doing so.

Are you keeping the inhabitants in the tank? You might get a mini-cycle if you are using live sand.

I have a blue star damsel, orange and purple lobster, red scooter blenny, 2 nasarrius snails, a margarita snail, an astrea snail, a top crown snail, and a variety of corals living in the tank. I thought i recalled reading that i'd be killing the bacteria in the sand now if more sand was added? does that sound right to anyone?

I am not sure that the bacteria forms at shallow sand depths. I know that the denitrifying bacteria you are looking for develops at 4"-6" of sand depth. Is that the depth you are planning on? I am concerned that there could be a little bit of die-off from the sand you add to the tank, spiking ammonia and nitrite levels.
