Black / Dark sand?
I've got a couple of bottom dwellers in my tank, and it was recommended to me to get a sand type gravel.
Anyone know where I can pickup some black or darker shaded sand? I'm only finding a "finer" gravel...
Are you opposed to sand? Black sand looks really nice and bottom dwellers would be very comfortable with it. Just a thought...
I'm looking for some black sand, however I cannot find any at my LFS or online.
All I'm finding is black gravel which isn't what i want.
Anyone know where I can find some black or darker sand?
You can buy pool filter sand at a swimming pool store 25lbs for about $10. I have this in my 55 gal. tank. It is a courser sand but it needs to be washed many times. After the sand settles turn on the filter and rinse out the filter pad for a couple of days. The water should clear up the next day. Corys love the sand and so do Plecos. waste and food settles on the top of the sand and it's easy to keep clean. Algae on the sand top can be rubbed between your hands and the sand it back to the tanish white color. Black sand can be picked up at some fish stores. I got 5lbs for about $5. This sand shows up all the food waste and fish waste more but looks nice in a tank with neon fish or red cherry shrimp with a black background. Stay away from the fine powder sand black or white as this floats about and can get in your filter. I switched from gravel to sand in all my tanks and will never go back to gravel. pool filter sand makes a brighter tank but black sand looks nice in planted tanks and has iron in it so it is good for the plants. Put about 2" high sand level in your tanks. Good luck! it's hard work to clean it but it is worth it. My black sand I got at the local fish store did not need rinsing and was not as dirty. I just dumped it in. If you do not want to spend time rinsing the sand the filter should be able to clear it up if you stir it and rinse out the filter pad with the filter off first while stirring then turn the filter on in about a weeks time also.
