Are any rocks okay to use?
I've been wanting to put some rocks in my aquarium for some time now. I was going to take the easy route and buy some from the lfs but none have looked natural enough for me. I've been keeping my eye out for good rocks wherever i go. I found a huge supply of rocks a couple blocks from my house. They look perfect for the look i want. The only problem is i don't know if they are safe to use. I wish i knew how to identify rocks:lol:. So i need some help. I was thinking maybe everyone could post about what rocks are safe and maybe post some pictures of them.
I am no rock expert, but I do know that some are said to alter your ph and there for it is recommened to leave the rock in a bucket of water for a while and test for ph changes.
limestone and lava rocks will affect your ph. You need to test any new rock with vinegar (my lfs use ph down liquid) and if it fizzles, it's bad for your tank (unless you actually need a higher ph in your tank!)
Also to kill off anything that may hurt your fish, you should pour boiling water on the rock for around 30 seconds or so.. don't just boil them tho...
So...really the only way to know if they are ok is to do the vinegar test?
Or test some water in a clean bucket, then put the rock in and after a couple days re test for changes. If there's no changes, it's ok.
