where did my loach go

i bought 3 yo yo loaches about 6 days ago and i still se two of them all the time. i have not seen the other one, i lifted the rocks up and could not find him anywhere. do they ever bury themselves in the gravel and die?

Most likely it hid inside filter intakes. No, they don't bury themselves in gravel like what the kuhlis and horse-face loaches do.:)

i looked inside my filter and found nothing. i also checked on the ground around my tank in case he was a jumper but found nothing!!!!

That's odd. Loaches are very tricky to find unfortunately.:shake: Have you seen any unusual behavior at the time it is visible?:)

giarc721 01-12-2007 09:29 PM

i actually have not seen it since the day i took it out of the bag from the fish store, all three loaches immediately went into hiding after they did their initial exploring of the tank, the next morning i turned on the lights nothing. when i fed the fish the two come out and eat, but only the two.

Oh. I would only assume it died. If it is small, then the body did dissolve quickly thus you are unable to see it anymore.:shake: I do hope your ammonia is zero otherwise if it was detectable, it will kill your fish. Ammonia spike can be caused by decomposing corpse.

I experienced something similar -- have you seen the third one at all?

I bought 3, and for about 2 weeks I almost never saw the third. Gradually he has become more and more active. Guess he was just shy at first. Now I see him out and about all the time.

it was fairly large so i am thinking it did not dissolve already, i am hoping i am just not seeing him out at all. thank you all very much

depending on the tank decor its either in something in the tank hiding or dryed up behind the tank. I bet its behind the tank.

When I went to transfer my original three Striata from the Amazon tank to their permananet home in the 55, one of them hid so well that I had to pull all the plants, driftwood, and rocks out of the tank, reduce the water level to about 1/3, and stir the gravel with my fingers to get him to show himself. Loaches can be devilishly hard to find when they want to be.

In fact, when I bought the batch of seven assorted loaches that became the nucleus for the Loach Motel, the three striata in that batch were hidden up in a fake hollow driftwood. The guy who was selling them didn't even know they were there until one of them flipped out into the sink as we were getting ready to put the decor back in the tank.

So best of luck. Hope you find him sometime.
