Is buying or building a denitrator worth the trouble? the nitrate ppm in my aquarium is pretty hi. the ammonia is 0ppm though. I have three live plants in the aquarium to help with the nitrate problem. Water changes are the best route? I'm planning on going away during the summer for about 3 weeks, and I don't want my parents to have to change the water. Any suggestions on the nitrate problem?
Could you please post your tanks and inhabitants? You might want to feed a bit more before you leave and do plenty of water changes to compensate for the possible food leftovers and added wastes. When you come back, start with small water changes daily and increase water volume each day until your nitrate is back to where it should be. Healthy fish can do well without food for at least 2-3 weeks.
60 gallon with a wet/dry filter
2 zebra danios
1 ghost knife
3 black skirts
1 dwarf gourami
1 algae eater
what's a denitrator?
the bacteria that eat up nitrate are anaerobic oxygen is toxic to them, so a denitrator is a filter system that does not involve oxygen.
^ i think that is right.
so is it something like an under gravel filter/ chamber with a tube that leads the toxic air out of the tank?
google it! ><
i did. it gave the same thing you said. I saw some DIY systems but i'm still a bit confused... and it was all for saltwater tanks. Since this is under freshwater, im guessing it works slightly differently.
I also don't quite understand how you plan to use a denitrator on freshwater. I don't really see a point either, I understand how the work. But how do you clean the filter without exposing it to oxygen and killing off your bacteria. Whats your nitrate at anyway? You tank is really lightly stocked, nitrate should not be an issue. What do you do for weekly waterchanges?
