Betta harassing gouramis. Help!
Just starting my tank. I had a male betta in there alone for a week, then added 5 tetras and 2 dwarf blue gouramis on Saturday. Within the last day or so, he has started harassing the gouramis on a fairly regular basis. Why the aggression? I've been told that lone male bettas are okay for community tanks.
No, bettas may be peaceful but there are exceptions. Bettas should never be mixed with gouramis, angelfish, guppies and fin nippers. The issue behind why bettas tend to be aggressive is that some gouramis are equally colorful and will be regarded as rivals. Even the male gouramis themselves are no stranger to being aggressive at all.:shake: But as I said, there are also exceptions.:) Male pearl and honey gouramis rarely fight with each other.
IMO, I'd remove the dwarf gouramis. Male dwarves can be vicious at times. They act more like cichlids when it comes to constructing bubblenests. The same goes with bettas but bettas always behave like that.:wink2:
That's a bit disheartening, because we like the betta and the gouramis both, but I guess if something's got to give, then something's got to give. :(
