White spot not gone after first treatment dose?
Hi all, I care for my mums 200l freshwater tank and while I was on holiday she bought a pair of male dwarf gourami. They immediately got attacked by her red tailed shark so she took them and put them in my old betta tank that has been running empty for a while.
When I got home I noticed a few white spots on them but they have a pattern of light blue spots so I wasnt sure at first but by Sunday they had developed a few more spots and the original ones where bigger so I put the first dose of treatment in. Now I've only had to treat for whitespot twice before (new fish both times) but in both those cases the spots had gone before it was time for the second dose. That second dose went in today and they still have the spots.
Any ideas on this? does white spot regularly do this? can I add a third dose in another 4 days?
Hi KellyL. First, I assume by white spot you mean ich parasites? Like they look kind of like little salt flecks?
Secondly, what kind of treatment are you using? Do you have the name of it? That would help. :)
In the meantime, if you can, try to increase the heat to about 30 C because increased heat literally causes the parasites to stop their life cycle. This means they can't reproduce so when they die, they die. Depending on what other kind of fish you have in there, you most likely will need to add an airstone to increase aeration. At higher temps, the oxygen levels get lower and some fish really can't tolerate that. If any of the fish show signs of distress, lower the heat a bit.
