Behavior Question: Jack Dempsey & Oscar
Hey all, it's been awhile! So I have 3 cichlids in my tank: an Oscar, a Jack Dempsey and a Red Devil...I'm actually looking to rehome the Devil because it is SO aggressive with the other 2. Trust me, I didn't know what I was getting when I was at the store because it was all black, not orange.
Anyway the Devil likes to go after the JD specifically and...ok I know this sounds strange...but the Oscar seems to protect the JD! When he sees the Devil coming, he'll posture in between the two and will sometimes go after the Devil. When the Oscar and JD are not being bothered they are hanging out and sometimes I see them posturing between each other and lip locking.
My question is: could I have a female of one of them and could they possibly be becoming a mated pair? Is this even possible?
Here are pictures of the two:
Well . . . I personally haven't heard of oscar/dempsey pairings but I suppose it's possible you have a pair. It may be, however, that they won't be able to produce any offspring together even though they regard themselves as a mated pair.
