Can carbon from filter be stored for a while?
I added a Fluval 305 to my 125 gallon for some extra filtration last weekend. I put some carbon in their on the advice of my lfs and some reviews of the Fluval filter. I've been running the filter with it for a week now and it seems to have made the water crystal clear as advertised but now I'm rethinking it. Would it be ok to take it out, store it, and then use it again later if I needed it to remove medicine or to clear up the water again? Or would I need to buy new stuff later?
Activated carbon has a life span of about 3-7 days, once it has reached it's maximum absorption its worthless. IMO there is no need to run carbon, except for medicine removal.
If you have a hob filter you could use it in that to remove medication, but once you use it throw away, don't put it in fluval unless you like to clean it alot, I have fluvals on all my tanks aswell as hob filters all I use the fluval for is bateria filter just full of bio material. Carbon is not what it's cracked up to be IMHO don't use at all.
I agree, I only recenetly used it to remove excess medication from an ich like treatment
I wouldn't store it. It's inexpensive enough that I wouldn't bother trying to store it as you've already had it in the water.
I agree, If you are using carbon to remove medications ,, I would not want to reuse it in another tank or the same one for that matter. However, I use KENT marine carbon at times to clear healthy tanks after cleaning in a HOT MAGNUM filter. Only takes a half hour to an hour tops. I then open the cannister and allow the carbon to dry until the next use. In this way I see no harm in reusing it until it's capabilities are exhausted.
