Sexing Parrot Cichlids
I would like to buy Love Heart Parrots Cichlids or Red Parrot Cichlid, I want a pair , but just cant tell the sex. I saw the big ones are easily to be sex, every female has a breeding tube. My tank cant put so big ones.

I want to sex the smaller ones, ( 4inches-6inches) but how? Are they the same as the big ones? How old should they be to be able to sex them easily? Anyway, when is the breeding season?

I'm not sure how to sex them, but be aware that efforts to breed them will almost surely be unsuccessful. These fish are a man-made hybrid and many (most?) of them seem to be infertile. Also, as they are not naturally found in the wild, they don't have a "breeding season." Also, be aware that the "love heart" parrots are mutilated by the breeders as babies so that they have that shape as adults (in fact, even the standard blood parrots are often mutilated as babies to give them their characteristic "parrot" shape). Blood parrots are also often dyed to achieve the bright red or orange colors that you see.

Aside from the moral issues related to this fish, keep in mind that the deformities related to this hybrid leads to health problems. The fish sometimes have trouble swimming, and because it cannot fully close its mouth, there can be feeding problems. Most common, however, are swim bladder issues resulting from the deformed body shape of the fish.
