Ideas for stocking/decorating 40 gallon
 
Hello I am going to be purchasing a 40 gallon tank within the next week or so and am looking for ideas on what fish I could keep in there with a school of my 6-8 neon tetras. I like the dwarf guoramis and would enjoy keeping a bottom-feeder or two.

The standard stocking formula is bottom feeders, middle swimmers, top swimmers (if tank is large enough), pleco and centerpiece fish.

You could get Cory catfish for the bottom, you have neons for middle fish, you could get zebra danios for the top, get a BN pleco and then a pair of dwarf cichlids.

Now what measurements do you think would be better for a set up like the one you stated? 36"L x 18"W x 16"H or 48" x 13" x 16"

You could do it in either, but I think the longer tank is better. None of those fish will benefit from the extra width like they would from the extra length.
