75 gallon tank need filter advice
We are trying to decide on what equipment to get for the 75 gallon tank we are getting. I was thinking of getting the Marineland Emperor 400. Will one be enough if we are only going to have smaller community fish or is it best to have 2? Also I read online about adding a water pump to prevent anaerobic dead spots. Do I also need a water pump? Which is a good one and how do you add in a water pump if I need one? Thanks for your input.

You could get away with a Emperor 400 and a powerhead to create a current for hte other side. Or maybe throw on a emperor 200
On my 55G I'm going to put on a Marineland 350 and a Marineland 200, then eventually upgrade to two 350s....
if you put on two filters (one on each side) you shouldn't need a powerhead
I'm a fan of over filtering. I use two Emperor 400's on 75 gal. For small community fish, you could prolly get by with one. Or you could use an Emperor 400 and one Emperor280.Would be plenty of filtration with one mounted on each end. Should you decide on just one, Then a small pump with airline tubing leading to air stone could help with dead areas.

I'd go for two filters. Then alternate the cleaning of each. If one fails you'd still have some filtration.

I have a 55 gal. tank. I sold the filter that the tank came with on craigslist and bought a bio canister filter for a 75 gal. tank. It's a good idea to get a bigger filter so I would get one thats for 100 gal. tank. My filter takes 4 filter cartridges. Every month I put the filter in the back and move it to the front and put in a new filter pad in the back. That way you save some of the good bacteria on the filter. That way you also save money on filter pads. I have never had a problem doing this and my water quality is good every week. I also bought a Submariner UV Sterilizer/Clarifier for my tank through Pet Supplies | Dog & Cat Supplies, Pet Meds | DrsFosterSmith.com Pet Products
It has a current and iimproves oxygenation and water quality and has a untraviolet sterilizer.I would check out the Marineland Emperor 400 Bio-Wheel it's for 30-80 gal tank. DrFosterSmith sells this for $48.39 . I bought DrFosterSmiths Bio System Powr Filter & Oxy Surface Skimmer it was $33.99

Forgot to tell you that yes 1 Marineland Emperor 400 Bio-wheel would be great for your tank. It is fine having this and switching out the filter pad like I said after running the tank for a month. This saves money on filter pads. If you order through Drsfostersmith April 2009 you can get a free algae scubber with any order if you enter this coupon code: 3384/2144 :-D next month May 2009 if you enter coupon code: 3384/2145 the shipping is 50% off of ground shipping.

I have a single cascade 1500 filter. Has worked great for me for 3 years now. I am not adding another filter, I see zero reason to.

Thank you! I decided on 2 Marineland 350's. At least if one would go then i'd still have one working until I got another.

good choice. like the above poster said....take a look at drsfostersmith for the pads, they are the cheapest I have found anywhere. They usually offer some kind of shipping discount....like the same price once you order so much....good luck!

You will not have to replace the filter pads all the time...........everytime you see there are really dirty, just rinse them in your old tank water ( the water you take out at water changes).........Only clean one of the filters at a time.......Next water change, clean the other filter the same way............No need to replace the filter pads unless they are literally falling apart............The filter companies want you to replace them all the time, so they can continue to cash in on the sales..........
