Its been many years since I last used a Aquaclear filter, but I am puzzled as to why you need the ammonia removal insert. The plain foam is to remove particulate matter from the water (and it provides some biological action as well), the carbon is to remove toxic substances in the water (if any), and the biomax stone insert is to provide a large surface area on which the bacteria will grow that provides the biological filtering, most important. As the bacteria need ammonia, I don't see why there should be an amonia remover, it seems to be defeating the purpose of the biological filtration. I would suggest leaving the ammonia insert out; it could be used should you ever have an ammonia spike due to some catastrophe, but let's hope that never occurs.

Others with more experience with Aquaclear may have more to say. If you want to find out more about the nitrogen cycle, you can have a look at my post in this same forum under the topic "I'm a little concerned", my response of 04-02-2009 at 3:07PM explained the cycle in detail. That may better explain why I'm suggesting you remove the ammonia insert.

Is this a new tank, or one that has been running a while and is fully cycled?

After I responded to this post, I saw your other on cloudy water, and that answered some questions. Here's my response to that thread:

I've just responded to your filter question in a separate thread. This thread has answered my question about this being a new tank, and I now see why you got the ammonia insert. I still say not to use it.
But you are ging to have some very stressed fish if this is a new tank and clearly it is not yet cycled. Please read my other post on the cycle process which should explain what's happening in your tank.

I strongly suggest you get to a fish store and buy a bottle of "Cycle" or similar product. This is a bacteria supplement that will "seed" your filter immediately, adding live nitrosomonas and nitrobacter bacteria to get the biological (nitrogen) cycle going to handle the ammonia (and subsequent nitrite). The cycling process will last somewhere from 2 to 8 weeks, but my experience has been with Cycle it will only be two weeks. Don't add any more fish until the tank is fully cycled.
