Thinking about purchasing a Calico Ryukin Goldfish.. Advice? I'm looking into purchasing a Calico Ryukin Goldfish. Will my local LPS carry these or are they harder to find? Will they eat the same thing as my common goldfish? (goldfish flakes) Will one be okay in a 5 1/2 gallon? Thank you. |
Well for starters, a gold fish of any species should not be kept in any thing smaller than 20 gallons per fish (with commons needing a little more!) due to A, they get up to 6-16in. B, they produce massive waste= high ammonia. And btw goldfish ARE social animals... And on another note mat I recommend tetras?;-) |
Same here, I wouldn't put any kind of goldfish in a smaller tank then a 20 gallon and longer is always better then tall for more surface area. I usually go by the rule 10 gallons per goldfish but I have a 20 gallon long to give my redcap more room and plus hes about 7-8 inches long. |
Okay. I have a 20gal long on order now but it won't be here for a few months. Will the fish be okay in a five until I get the 20gal? I also have a 10gal on hand just in case. I'll be purchasing the smallest fish I can, so he'll have some time to grow. |
I think the 10 gal would work for a couple months. Goldfish grow fast if they have room to grow, I believe the goldfish could develop health problems from stunted growth living in a 5 1/2 for a couple months. |
