Recommended lighting for a 45L tank?
Hi everyone! Sorry if this is in the wrong section, there's so many of them! :-)
Yesterday I inherited a 45L Rena aquarium which I intend on keeping a few neon tetras in. It's come with everything I need but the original lighting tube and starter aren't with it so I need to buy something.
Question is what type of lighting should I get? Fluorescent tube or LED? I've seen some Juwel fluorescent tubes but these seem to suggest I need two types of tube (day and warm/colour) is this really necessary? The room where the tank will be gets a lot of day light and I'm not having live plants so I only really need the light for viewing purposes, and I'm on a tight budget so don't want to spend too much.
Can anyone recommend me some suitable lighting for my tank please? Tank length is 60cm and width 30cm
If you never plan plants then almost any old lighting will do. I like LED lighting but the only fixtures I have used are marineland. They have a singlebright, double bright and plant systems that start at 18" (adjustable to 24", which makes this good value as you don't really need a full 24" of light.... I use a 24" over a 30" with plants). Probably under $50. If you compare this long term to fluorescents you might buy a few tubes and a starter or two over the six year life expectancy of the LED fixture which is about the same cost or more.
I forgot, the LED have a very cool shimmer effect that really gives the tank a whole other dimension.
Cool thanks JDM. Any chance you can post a link to an example LED set up? Just so I know what I'm looking for when I go out to buy :-)
Found this, any good?
That's a blue light, you might want something more white with blue.
Here is the marineland product, don't mind the pricing, it's sort of like MSRP.
There are lots out there though, it's far less critical to get "the right light" when you are not dealing with plants.
Here's a shot of my tank, it's the plant light so it's really bright but all the marineland fixtures look the same... less the timer, mine has a built in timer.
I see I have an adventurous penny wort sprout shooting up beside the filter hoses... I wonder if is a flower or a leaf bud.
