Is a glass top needed if you have a canopy?

I am going to get a 50 gallon tank and build a stand and a canopy for it. Is it necessary to have a glass top on it besides, or is the hood fine? I will probably mount a light fixture to the underside of it.

You will definetly want something between the lights an the water. Lights get hot and the air above the tanks get humid. Condensation is going to build up on the lights. Its going to cause a hazard and greatly reduce the life of the light fixture.

A glass top would be idea. Is the tank 50gal or 55gal? You can usually buy premade lids, but if I remember correctly they are pricey at stores. I've bought mine online, or I buy used ones.

It's a 50, and I can buy it with out without the lid. I was just checking to see if it was necessary. Thanks.
