Can a Tank recycle?
Long time lurker, First time poster
29 gallon tank
random fish that all love eachother.
1 bala shark.
6 feeder ( I did a fish present cycle there all alive)
And 2 other fish that are tiny that I cant think of there name at the momment.
My tank has been up and running a couple months.Cycled it, nice and clear water. Everything tested perfect added 2 fish per week.
Then the tank started getting cloudy, So I did a 20-25% water change And my tank is still cloudy. everything still tests fine. ph.nitrate,nitrite,ammonia.
Is there a reason for my water to become cloudy again?
thanks for any help.
You are overstocked. Its not what you want to hear, but that is a terrible stocking.
1) Bala Shark needs to go. They get 16" long and need to be in groups. They are tropical.
2) Feeder Goldfish need to go. Not only are they disease-ridden, they get 24"+ and are coldwater.
3) What type of pleco?
4) Moores need to go, unless all you want in the tank are them. They are coldwater.
And what do you mean by "my water tests fine?" We need to know the params. Did you use a liquid kit or strips?
And two fish per week is very, very fast.
I'll bet they're all babies, but it's true those feeders alone probably max your tank out. Goldfish are huge waste producers. There should be signs on these tanks hu. Perhaps the LFS will take those fish you decide to part with back and allow you to make some other selections. In the meantime do a partial water change(tomarrow) a rise in bacteria causes green algea, sometimes it appears as cloudy water.Keep posting as you have more q's.
It is possible that by adding fish that fast, you could have started a mini-cycle. I would suggest that you either pick tropicals(the bala, and possibly the other two) or coldwater(the moore and feeders) and stick with one or the other since they need two different ranges of temperature.
thanks. im going to put the feeders and moores into a 10gal i have til I figure out what to do with them.
As far as stocking this thing what would you suggest. Ill stay tropical. Ide like a community. Size doesnt matter,Bunch of small would work. Im building it for my new born so when he's 6-8 months + he can watch and be amazed,
In fact Im typing this with 1 finger holding him. ill move the feeders and moores over when my 10 is done cycling.
Putting them in a 10G is the worst thing you can do. They need to go back to the store, or you need to get a 150G tank. Feeders (Comets) get 24" long and Moores get 10" long, and are all waste factories.
I agree, unless you want to spend the money on over-filtration and a large tank, the goldfish family is not really what you want to have around right now. I would double check to make sure your tank is cycled and your readings are definitely zero for ammonia and nitrite. Then you might want to look into fish that are colorful which I believe a toddler will like more. Possibly look into 4-10 fancy MALE guppies, a blue dwarf gourami, and either a group of cories or my favorite...3-4 BOTIA type loaches. They are very active and fun to watch once they are comfortable in their surroundings. This does not include clown loaches or dojo loaches since neither of those will work in your tank. These are types of fish that I would personally pick, there are many more out there that will work as well as many that wont. You might want to browse the freshwater fish section of liveaquaria.com and look for fish that are peaceful and will do well in 20-30gallon tanks(says in the upper right hand grey box). You then could go to your local fish store and be armed with knowledge of what you want beforehand, so you don't buy something that looks good in the store, but wont work for your tank.
Your correct. I want colorful fish. To be honest the lfs doesnt have much and Im a good 45 mins away from the nearest "city" My wife liked the moores and the feeders were colorful they were first to start off thie fish hobby Im getting into.
Then I found this forum. And my ideas changed. I mixed some fish together. And there getting along great so far.But Ive also learned alot in the last month of *phishing this forum* But I agree with you all the feeders and Moores are not what Im after as far as a tank set up go's.
Now when I say Im moving them to the 10gal. Its temporary. just a few days. Im going to give the feeders to the lfs, and just keep the 2 black moores in the 10gal for the wife it can be her tank ( Tho Ill do all the work like I do wiith "her cat")
But I do want a more colorful tank with maybe 2 or more schools and a *center piece fish* something a little bigger.
Also: My tank is really clearing up. I did it a day ago. I remember PH was 7.1 And I cant remember now if it was nitrates or nitrites but one was at 0 the other.75? ammonia was low.25. I cant remember the nitrates/nitrites exactly to be honest. my appolgies.
I think it went threw a mini-cycle. It started after I cleaned the tank. And I think I may have moved the gravel and sucked up to much and it went to a "re-cycle".
Any help on stocking, and opinions on the current tanks test feel free to chime in. Im here to learn.
Get a 20 gallon long for the moores. A 10G is too small for them. No goldfish can thrive in a 10G.
those numbers make sence? Im Useing test strips NOT theliquid. When my wife go's back to work Ill be buying liquid test kits.
My Cousin has a 20 long, maybe I can put them in there til my 29 is open
Ill be doing my 29 for awhile. How long? I dont know just til I upgrade to a 75 gallon. But with my wife on maternity leave things are a little tight so it probably wont be til christmas . ( If I dont have a new tank by then thats what Ill be asking for)
