Old tank, silicone problem
Hello. I have a old ten gallon tank set up. THis is my oldest tank. The silicone along a few of the edges is lifting up, is this going to cause a leak? I'm torn on whether to tear it down and fix it or if i should hold off. It is established with fish, and is currently my only established tank. if i had more that were established i would take it down in no time, but unfortunately i don't. I wasnt sure if there was enough structure to the corners that it would hold up or if it would just leak instantly.
If the edges are lifting it's not going to leak immediately. The edges of the filets are just there for a smooth transition. The silicone doing the real work of holding things together is more towards the center. If its unsightly I'd just trim it off being careful not to scratch the glass. If you're really worried about it replace the tank.
A new ten gallon tank will cost you $10, $20 at the absolute most. A tube of good silicone can cost $5. Factor in the time it takes to break the tank down, let the silicone cure for three days, then put everything back in the tank and it's just not worth it to save $5.
Haha, trust me, i've thought about the costs.. if it comes down to it i would just buy the new tank and be done with it. My main concern is/was to make sure it will not leak. How far in will it have to get in order to cause a leak? I plan on replacing the tank, but do not have the spare cash right now. I'm hoping to hold off until i have appropriate funds.
