Getting a fire eel...
Hey guys .
Will be getting a fire eel within this week and i was just wondering if anyone knows a bit about these majestic fishes. I have a 55g tank with 2 blue 3spotted gouramis, and 4 ghost knives. I know it's not that big for all these but i'm planning to move to a bigger tank in a couple of years. The fire eel is nearly 25cm and i already placed a 70cm pvs pipe in my tank and i alrady have rounded small black gravel and 2 pieces of driftwood and plenty of fake plants. My PH: 7.5, temp: 26 degrees celcious GH:10 and No2 of 0.0 mg. Anything else i should know about in order not to lose my fire eel cause i set the tank up especially for a fire eel.
I have not kept fire eels, but I wanted suggest asking the place you pick him up at, what he is eating.
They can sometimes be picky eaters.
Also, make sure there are no escape routes out of the tank.
They don't know much actually that's why i posted this thread
If your fire eel is anything like my peacock eels, he will appreciate the pvc pipe.
Mine hang out there most of the day. I tried to replace it with a nicer decoration of similiar size, but they would not use it and I put the pvc pipe back in.
When buying the eel, try to get one that looks like it has been eating. Sometimes you see eels that are way too thin.
Some people have good luck feeding them live shrimp or thawed bloodworms. My eels will only eat blackworms. I few times I have had luck feeding them small earthworms.
If he is small enough to swim up your filter, he will. Might be a good idea to wrap some netting around your filter to keep him out.
Yeah i think they're quite similar with the peacock eels. Actually the filter spacing is thin so i think it won't be able to swim up my filter. I thought that my pvc was ugly as it is so i bought some aquamate silicone and covered the pvc pipe with it on the outside layer and then put some of my black gravel on it and now it looks that there's nothing in my tank, it's so well covered!!Maybe you can give it a shot my friend. It's much prettier than the cold and ugly colour od the pvc pipe. As for the fire eel, i'll most certainly go for the fattest one available:o)
