New tank... now what?

So i have a 5 gallon tank *in pic* and i got it second hand off craigslist. Do i need to get a new filter? its kinda greenish. i am kinda new to filters and all, since i just 2 bettas and thats it. I am either putting a betta OR a dwarf puffer in here. if the DP's it will get cycled, other wise, probably not

If the water looks like it flows fine, then I would say that the filter is good to go! You may find that you wont need to cycle the tank if the tank was running up until you acquired it.

If the filter media has been kept wet you should have a much shorter cycle time. If it's dry, then you might as well replace it because it may have some nasty bacteria on it by now. I would honestly cycle it either way because a 5 gal is a pain to do 100% water changes on.

Have fun with it!! :)

Hmmm. good idea kim, didn't think about that. Next time i go to eugene ill get a new filter, it hasn't been constantly wet, but the water runs just fine, just takes a few seconds to get going... *i thought i read somewhere that you aren't supposed to run a filter dry even for a few minutes, and it makes this horrible sound when you first turn it on. It turns out it just needs a second to work... lol, i thought it was going to be a dud*
