Help Please! Does anyone know what kind of fish this is?
I just inherited an aquarium from my son and this tank and one fish has been through several people...All I know is this fish supposedly ate all the other fish...So far he's been good. He came with a big angel and since I've added 4 angels and a beta and two silvers dollars(I have two more on the way)I have bought a divider to use if this fish becomes aggressive, but so far he hasn't...he's mostly grey with light stripes, but sometimes he sits on one of my plants and his stripes turn very black and lately he's been getting blacker...but when swims around in the acquarium his stripes get lighter...I would appreciate any help I can get! I'm not the know it all Chiclid person, but I do know something from the chiclid family when I see it. In the past I have had Jack Demspy's and Firemouths which lived nearly 10 years. He/She looks very stressed so not seeing true colors, but what I can see I would have to guess it is a Firemouth Chiclid by the horizontal black markings that I can see.
I'm new to the forums, so hopefully someone else here can pick out more details from the pic and being that he is stressed.. I know some can tell by fin's..
Good luck with finding an answer, but I will give a bit of advice.. The Betta in the tank will not be safe with the Chiclids, The Silver dollars can grow to about 6" each and should do ok considering size.. and the Angels.. they tend to like taller tanks to swim up and down, not sure how they'll do with the other Chiclids considering their fins and the speed they can get away if chased.
Btw, what size is this tank?? If you don't know gallon size Height, Width and Depth measurements will tell you if you google up a Aquarium calculator :)
Hope my babbling helps out in some small bit.
Definitely a cichlid but not a Firemouth. My first impression was maybe a severum but the coloring is wrong and very washed out. Can you get a better picture, maybe a side view?
A side shot would help. Might be one of the acaras.
Looks very much like a Chocolate Cichlid to me, but its hard to say from that angle. The general coloring and red eyes especially. If it is a Chocolate, the betta will likely disappear soon and the angel will be killed.
The fact that there is an intact angel in the picture makes me think it may be a Convict who isnt showing his stripes at the moment. Convicts usually arent too aggressive unless spawning.
It is common for cichlids to change colors and stripes with their mood.
